Bringing a 1956 Family Legacy to Life: A Children’s Book Case Study

What happens when a client approaches you with a handwritten college script from 1956 and a handful of vintage family photos? You create magic!

Last year, I had the honor of working on Little Waddles, a deeply sentimental children's book written 70 years ago by the client’s mother during her time at Hanover College.

Here is a look behind the scenes of how we brought this beautiful family legacy to life:

📖 The Brief & Inspiration:

The client, Cynthia, provided the original script and vintage family photographs. The story features three main characters based on real life: Farmer Bill (inspired by her grandpa Willie), Brenda (inspired by her mother), and a cute little duck named Waddles. Her main request? A soft, warm, vintage pastel aesthetic.

⏳ The Creative Process:

• Phase 1: The Test Page. I illustrated the very first page to establish the character designs and the soft, whimsical digital watercolor style. Cynthia loved it immediately!

• Phase 2: The Full Book. Over the next 2 months, I worked closely with the client

• to bring the entire story to life.

• The Deliverables: I created 14 full-page illustrations, designed the book cover, and handled all the typesetting (the text placement) to make it completely print-ready.

• Project Cost: $1,462.50 USD.
